Re: Bilge pump location

On London Apprentice we have a manual pump drawing from the forward end of the saloon - the lowest point in the bilge - and an electric pump close to the engine compartment. I put it there so that the first junction in its limited-length electrical cable could be led up inside the engine compartment...

Re: Sabre Brochures etc

Keith, Well done indeed. The Association has a few Sabre drawings but those that would have been useful for home-assembly are mostly very faint. Ditto the drawings for the hull mouldings and stiffeners etc. To expand on Nick's comment, a quick alternative to scanning large drawings is to photograph ...

Re: Insurance Survey

Ant,
The insurance pamphlet is issued by the Association's Secretary (me) and if you give me a bell (see Rattling Sabres for my tel number) I will be able to help you.

Re: Sealing Window Frames - Sealing tape?

When I fitted new windows I used a compressible foam seal between the window flange and the GRP. It was a self-adhesive (on one side) neoprene foam tape of the kind sold by chandlers and was about 4mm thick before compression. Rathe than use simple fixing screws into the GRP, I had opted for additio...

Re: New rudder ? Sabre mk 1 fin keel

Andrew, The Handbook description etc is well-reasoned but won't help you dig a hole in concrete! The clearance under the skeg needs to be about 0.6m but as your boat is a very early one it might have some non-standard bits. You need to somehow measure the depth of the tube between cockpit and unders...

Re: Headlining and side panels for Mark 2 on Samphire

Jerry, If your transverse battens are not full width, it seems possible that Sea Spear has an early version of the coach roof construction - as described by Tony Mynett in the Members' Handbook under 'Lining - Relining a Sabre saloon'. That article also describes ways of dealing with the various cur...

Re: Headlining and side panels for Mark 2 on Samphire

Hi Jerry. My memory is a bit hazy on that detail but I seem to recall there were longitudinal backing timbers, possibly glassed inside each edge of the coach roof. They may be the strips that are shown on the drawing with curved outer edges. Photo 1, below, shows the after part of the headlining and...

Re: Headlining and side panels for Mark 2 on Samphire

Apart from some foam under the flexible (soft) linings in a few places, our boat is essentially uninsulated, so is bound to experience condensation in cold conditions. However, we don't sail in winter, so actual droplets of condensation are rare (except on the windows) but mould tends to collect aft...

Re: Headlining and side panels for Mark 2 on Samphire

I don't know if this helps, but I am attaching a copy of part of an old Marcon drawing, showing curved plywood battens on the inside of the coach roof. You will probably find that you have two big internal panels of liner material on a hardboard backing, and that they are screwed to these battens. T...

Re: Re-galvanising anchors

Re-galvanising has now been completed on 4 anchors - my two and two others - but there's a point worth noting by anyone else who may think of getting this done in the future. There was a price step from £115 to £140 at a combined weight of 50kg or over, and I expected to pay the higher figure becaus...
