Winterising my Yanmar YSE12

This year I was determined to winterise my own engine - a Yanmar YSE12 - but with intense cold and diminishing light I did everything in the wrong order and missed a few things out... I posted a summary of what I managed to achieve here:

Hi Nick.

Welcome to our world!

Remove all drive belts and lay them on top of the engine. Spray the pulleys 'V' sections all round with WD40 or similar after removing all rust with emery cloth strips drawn around the circumference. These surfaces should be shiny clean. The WD will prevent them rusting over the winter which will then wear your belts badly the following season.

On start-up, wash the protection off the pulleys with detergent or soap, (washing up liquid will do well) replace and tension the belts as required. The Alternator drive belt especially needs to be kept tight all the time or it will slip and wear quickly, producing nasty black dust in the process!

At the end of next season your pulleys should still be shiny clean, the belts worn hardly at all, and your work load decreased.
