Leaky bottom

Post by samphire2014 »

My Sabre leaks in the stern.

From observation it is now clear that the leakage only occurs when under power. The boat is 'dry' when moored or under sail.

Does the forum believe I should look at a) stuffing box or b) cutlass bearing.

Thoughts/input very much appreciated as stripping either is going to involve a fair bit of work and I would prefer to start with the most obvious candidate :)

The stuffing box is the likely culprit. It should be adjustable, to compress the packing a bit more, although you will need a BIG spanner. Is there also a greaser and have you been using it to add grease to the stuffing box. I used 1 turn of the handle each day.

Thanks to both of your replies. Yes I do have a greaser, which is used frequently. You have confirmed what I have been putting off for some time. Both web tips are downloaded, so I will look forward to my bed time reading and bilge time!
