Do you enjoy re-fits?
I guess I must because I keep doing them, different boats though

I have just completed the first top coat on Apogee's hull

The paint I am using is Sandtex Extra Flex gloss, I used it on a previous boat after having it reccommended. On the old boat it still looks great after 2 years afloat.

I am also re-wiring as I have yet to see a boat with wiring that I would trust. The photo below shows a diecast box that was fixed to the deck supplying power to the TriColour and Steaming light. Interestingly the Steaming light operated by earthing the cable to it

I suppose I should not be surprised that the two lights didn't glow very brightly

A happy new year and fair winds to all

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi Ian,

The hull looks great! As for the diecast box, I'm surprised it worked at all! I have rewired Latrigg, and I agree, there's not many boats out there with good wiring, I still do not know why everybody used mains cable? I found the cable colour format to be very random. I replaced everything with either twin insulated red/black or 7core trailer cable.( both 12v rated) The 7 core works very well for the mast! I have also replaced all external connectors with Bulgin ip68 rated plug/sockets, I thought it a better way to go than the original brass 3pin plugs. How are you doing apogee's?

Hi Ian

What paint did you use on the deck?

Hi

NigelR. I used International Brightsides Seattle Grey with non slip granules, sadly no longer made, but I managed to get 4 tins from a caravan shop! The replacement product will I am sure be fine. I have used Sandtex fine masonry paint on a previous boat with good results.

Malc. I have fitted a CablePort available from www.saltyjohn.co.uk.

A bit pricey, but against the cost of 3 plugs and sockets, and a cable gland for the VHF there is not much in it. I have mounted a plastic box under the deck above the "cold box" where all the cables are terminated on proper marine terminal blocks. All cable runs have about a foot of slack to allow for replacing ends etc. I will take some pictures when I have it all tidy and finished

The cableport looks really good and is strong enough to stand on.

Kind Regards

Ian

Hi all,

I quite like the look of this thing. From the view-point of a lumpy water sailor, will the cableport keep water out of the boat if and when you take a big 'Greeny' in bad weather, or might it need a little extra protection where the cables enter under the 'lid'?

Hi Paul

What is not apparent from the previous pictures is the lip.

The lip is about an inch and a quarter high. Both cable entries have high density foam blocking direct entry.

Instructions at http://www.elvabro.com/marin3.html

The whole thing is VERY simple and appears to be proof against any normal soaking. Possibly not should you turn Corsair into a submarine

Even if some water gets through to the lip, I suspect it would have difficulty getting any further, and as the connections are not directly in line they should not even get damp.

Available from http://www.saltyjohn.co.uk/cableport_boat_product.htm (recommended)

£89.95 includes P&P.

Still cheaper than 3 x waterproof plugs and a cable gland!

Kind Regards

Ian

Here is the cableport fitted on Apogee.

It is fitted at the same place the old diecast box was.

The old VHF cable went through via a connector just to the left. You can see the epoxy filler there. To be painted
