I'm looking at replacing the standing rigging - does £500 sound like a good price? Edit - sorry prob should have specified this includes new wire and terminals for all stays, new back stay forking plate and four bronze bottle screws (4 are good quality and condition).

secondly I was wondering what other sabres have in terms of backstays - I have a bifurcated / wishbone arrangement. I asked the rigger about the possibility of converting to two independent backstays and he reckoned it was lots of hassle (modifying and redesigning the masthead) and wouldn't really give any more security. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks! Being re-launched on friday, by no means finished, but close enough to get afloat, and I'm fed up of living in the yard... replacing all the deck fittings and a couple more coats of varnish on the rubbing rails can be done afloat...

sounds like a steal of a price!

Shamal has the same backstay arrangement as you describe - single split into two just above head hight - its been fine for 30 yesr so why change it?

The Sabre rigging is way above any modern yacht - so the risjs of failure are fairly remote.

Excellent, that's good to hear. Although I just realised that in fact it will be about £600 as the rigger estimated seperately for the forestay which he thinks may, or may not be troublesome on account of the old rotostay furling gear. hopefully we'll be able to get it apart without to much hassle...

Nick, my low price is probably in part due to the fact that the mast is down and everything is readily accessible.

sounds like messing around with the backstay is definetly a bad plan. Thanks for the replies!

So I am about to replace my standing rigging and possibly the old rotostay furler.

Anyone got any recent prices so I can have an idea what to expect?

Question for nick. When did you have the rigging done. Was think about changing it but may wait till I am further south and it apparently will be cheaper

Hi Mike & Fi,

We had the standing rigging replaced about 10 years ago by Ocean Rigging in Lymington. The bloke that did the work used to work for Marcon, rigging Sabres off the production line, so he knew what he was doing. Having said that, it was 10 years ago, so insurance might require new rigging..

I had the mast down, took the rigging to his workshop went to the pub-came back 3 hours later and collected newly swaged wires.

Backstay,Forestay,Caps,Lowers 3 Rigging Screws and a Backstay Splitter.

I paid £530.00. He visually inspected the open rigging screws and said they were good for another 30 years so they were reused apart from 3 which had received damage. The mast is still standing so can't be bad.
