Hi. I'm looking at a couple of Sabre 27 bilge keelers and would like to get a very rough idea of the cost of a new mainsail and genoa - I know there where lots of different sizes but any ballpark figure would be most helpful.
Thanks
Bob

Hi Bob
I had a new mainsail made by Kemps* in Wareham 2012. It's a loose footed power main with a 'packaway' system including all fittings for lazy jacks. The ball park figure was £1150. I can provide more details if you need them and can certainly give you the benefit of my (not all good) experience.
Hope this helps and please feel free to come back to me for any further information.
Best wishes

Hello. I got a new main and genoa from Jeckells in 2011 for £1500 (ordered at the boat show). There was a bit of a delay, but once they arrived I was very happy with them. Cheers. Simon.

Hi Bob
Re survey for Sabres I would recommend Reg Crawley of Brightlingsea.
He surveyed my fin keel Sabre about four years ago and was very fair and careful also gave me some good advice.
His contact tel is 01206 304414 mob 07906961119

Thanks for all the advice on sails. I've now got the boat and on first glance I might be able to get away with the existing sails for another season at least. The sacrificial strip on the foresail is definitely shot however; does anyone have any ideas on the cost of replacing this amd recommendations for a sail maker in the Brightlingsea area?
Again, many thanks
Bob

It is possible to replace it yourself, if you have a sewing machine and the time. If not you can probably save some time by unpicking the old one, as it takes hours. Save the old bits however, as they would give a sailmaker patterns for the new one.
I replaced three at the end of last year, 2 on old genoas that I was given, and then did the one we actually use. The practice helped, and if I say so myself I did a reasonable job. Cost around £80 for materials. I used a second had Janome 632 machine bought off the internet, with suitable needles, and all the materials came from Kayospruce.
Contact me if you want any other details.

Many thanks Ian; I think my skills might run to taking the old one off but I doubt that they would extend to replacing it!

If you are taking the old one off, go to local supermarket and get 2 or 3 stitch rippers. That is much the easiest way. Take your time, and remove all the thread remnants.
