Gibb winches maintenance

Hello
I have recently purchased a fin keel Sabre 27 and would like to know if anyone had the experience of doing the maintenance of the Gibb winches with a fixed handle on the bottom?
The winches on my boat are a bit stiff and presumably they need cleaning and lubricating.
If anyone had the experience of doing this and perhaps have some photos showing the process that will be very much appreciated.
I am concerned of losing parts of these discontinued winches when dismantling them.
Many thanks
Alex

Search for service Gibb winches on Google. Follow link to westerley centaur winches. Click Serviced winches, go to 8th thread down and there is a link to a how too page with pictures and instructions. If you are short of a cleaner, diesel does a good job of dissolving old grease.

I did it from iPad and I am no expert. If you struggle to find it, I will run it on my laptop and mail you the proper link.
Best
Chris

Chris
Tried to remove the winch covers today but no luck. They are really hard to remove. I must be doing something wrong. Do you know of any other site with more instructions/photos on how to clean the Gibb winches? Many thanks
Alex

Hi, I am not an expert, but have done the research as I faced the same problem when I first bought my boat. I have lewmar winches, but they were stuck on as well, so you have my sympathy!

According to this
http://www.bluemoment.com/manuals/gibbwinches.pdf should lift off after removing retaining screw. The split bearing may have something (broken spring part?) in the groove making it tight for removal.

You just have to keep turning and lifting up at the same time. Gentle warming with a hot air gun may help soften the grease inside. Be careful about using too much heat as the plastic sleeves can be damaged and replacements are obtainable. If you're just softening grease, a hot air gun or hair dryer is safer.

Hope this helps.
