Hello

two points here - I'm thinking of cutting out the middle of my forward hatch and bolting a piece of acrylic over the top as an economical way of making it lighter - any opinions before I get the jigsaw out?

secondly, I was wondering what arrangements other people have for securing the fwd hatch? I had a thingy like wot you get on sash windows, not the twisting plate but the one with a pivoting bolt, knurled nut and a sort of upstanding U into which you tighten the nut. This is a bit worn out and I'm dubious about the security so looking for something better. any ideas?

cheers

Toby

I have done what you mentioned above and cut a hole out of the middle of my hatch (about 300mm diameter) which i covered with a peice of black tinted perspex sikaflexed and screwed on. It has made a HUGE improvement to the light in the boat as its like having the hatch open all the time!

Did email some photos to be uploaded on the website a couple of weeks ago but they dont apear to be up yet (boat name inshaallah)

Thanks Mike, that's good to hear.

anyone got any thoughts on locking mechnaisms? is the 'brighton sash fastner' the typical arrangement?

thanks!

Oh - I've got one of these:

In fact I've two, but one doesn't do anything.

I like the idea of haveing a window on the forward hatch. Look forward to seeing the results.

To pick up on this thread, has anyone had any experience or fitting a Houdini hatch?

I've got a 500x500 one which came with the boat but was never fitted. I was originally thinking of a "hatch within a hatch" so you could open it both ways but there's to much of a taper on the GRP version, so it's not big enough. So it will be a swap...I'll probably expoy some wood inside and outside the existing lip and then belt sand the GRP down so that it's flat and then sikaflex and bolt or screw it in.

As always with these jobs someone will have already done it so if there are any pearls of wisdom I'd be interested to hear them.

Thanks!

Hi Ian, yes, I'd really like to see how that's been done so if you could post a photo or two I'd be very grateful.

Thanks

Hi guys.

Ian is right, there are some wierd goons around looking for vulnerable postings! May I recommend that you use the Forums facility for this purpose.

You can e-mail a poster securely from a posting by 'left clicking' the poster's name, and choosing 'E-mail the member' option. This opens a message box for text to be securely mailed using the Forums mail address.

You can then pass your personal address on without risk.

in my himble opinion, cutting a hole in the original GRP hatch is really a way of de valuing the boat and of loosing its originality. But I am fan of keeping things original as far as possible, and not everone sees thihs the same way!
Mine has a smaller canpa style hatch on top of the original, ) when I bought the boat) but I am seeking to put an original back, if I can find anyone taking theirs off who is willing to supply me with one!
Ideally, if you wish to have more light, take the original hatch off and keep it, then buy a lewmar or similar and build a small hardwood plinth for it to sit on so as to eliminate the coachroof camber and provide amounting platform. But , please keep the original, as a future owner may wish to put it back at some point in time! Only my thought anyway! whichever way,Let there be light!

Hi Ian,
I have just purchased a houdini hatch for Backdraft and was wondering if you would mind emailing me the photos if you managed to get them taken of your hatch just to give me another idea on which way is best to fit the new hatch!!! Or if anyone else out there has any photos of their hatches the more the merrier!!!

Many thanks
Kyle

Hi andy
Not 100% sure yet I will put the new one in first before I decide but certainly you can have first refusal on it when the time comes.
