Sabre 27 Rallies

Past S27OA Rallies

With the pandemic pressure apparently reducing, we have arranged bookings for a couple of events.

The 2021 South Rally will be at Marchwood Yacht Club, on Southampton Water, on 11th September. HW Southampton will be at 1443 on the Saturday. The pontoon berths are well sheltered and we always enjoy our visits. Catering this year will be by delivery and at our last rally a local takeaway outlet was very successful. Members whose boats are based far away are welcome to arrive by road.

The 2021 AGM will be on Sunday 21st November, at our usual venue of the Upper Thames Motor Yacht Club, at Sonning.

Sabre 27 Rallies are arranged on an area basis. The South Coast usually have two each year, one in June on the IOW and a second in October on the mainland to assist with members travelling by land if the weather is unkind. Other areas usually have one rally each year. Below are details of past Sabre 27 rallies.

Hardway SC in Portsmouth Harbour

On the weekend of 2nd – 3rd September we shall be holding our autumn rally and laying-up supper at Hardway Sailing Club, located on the Gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour.
As usual, new members will get a particularly good opportunity to inspect other Sabres and compare notes.

Download leaflet here

Portsmouth High Water on the Saturday is at 13.50.

The HSC pontoon is restricted and does dry at low tide Springs , access for fin keelers will be from 11.00 to about 17.30.
Hardway Sailing Club is situated on the west side of the harbour, having a long 500m pontoon with a “T”.
We do not have to pre-book moorings at the club. The HSC pontoon fee per night is £20 payable by card or cash at bar. The bar will be open from Midday Saturday. The HSC pontoon and sailing club have electronic locks, we will be available to let you in to the club to pay your pontoon fees.
NOTE – when you pay at the bar, ask for a guest electronic entry card for access to the pontoon and Hardway Sailing club facilities. The cards at the end of your stay are to be returned at the bar or the honesty box, located under the balcony.

Car-borne arrivals
Hardway Sailing Club
103 Priory Rd
Gosport
PO12 4LF.

You can either park in the Hardway car park on Priory Road, adjacent to the sailing club or at the Green Lane free long stay. To gain entry to the club compound, either use the entry bell at the pedestrian gate, attract the attention of someone in the compound or give me (John Rohde) a ring on 07831 496597 or Jenny Rohde on 07767 205969. On the day I will have my radio open on VHF Channel 80.

Catering

Hardway is fortunate to have a pretty flexible caterer, willing to cater for special dietary needs. The galley opens on both on Saturday and Sunday. They are well priced and we are looking to obtain attendee numbers and any dietary needs.
We can then look at options for menus.

Pilotage

For those who have not been into Portsmouth, please take some time to look at the Kings Harbour Master (KHM) notice and be reminded that the entrance can be extremely busy with both commercial and military traffic.

KHM Portsmouth Small Boat Channel Rules

Rally and Laying-up Supper at Marchwood Yacht Club, Southampton Water

On the weekend of 11th-12th September we shall be holding our autumn rally and laying-up supper at Marchwood Yacht Club, in the upper reaches of Southampton Water. This rally is always enjoyable although we had to ‘miss’ 2020 on account of Covid. As usual, new members will get a particularly good opportunity to inspect other Sabres and compare notes.

Southampton High Water on the Saturday is at 1543, which should suit boats from east or west, although those coming from the east may have to leave their harbours against the flood.

IMPORTANT We do not have to pre-book moorings at the club. However, as the club’s catering is still out of action we propose to order a bulk pizza delivery from Rocco’s in Hythe. This worked very well in 2019 but it is easier to organise if crews arrive during the afternoon (ie. before evening) or let me know their preferences in advance. It would therefore be helpful if as many attendees as possible could contact me in advance – tel 023 8084 4804 or email to: kendean@onetel.com until the evening of Friday 10th Sept. The bar should open at about 8pm and takes only plastic payment (not Amex). Also please bring some cash, as I will have to pay for the food delivery by phone and I cannot take your reimbursement by card!

If the weather turns bad, or if your mooring is far away, please come anyway – by car.
On the afternoon (but not before) I will probably be using mobile No. 07380 402304.

Marchwood Yacht Club Location

This year the mooring fee is £15 (pay at bar and keep receipt). The MYC pontoon ramp and road gate have security locks. Car-borne arrivals should try to attract the attention of someone in the compound. The club’s OOD, Alan Saunders, will be looking after us on the day and using VHF Channel 80. His mobile number is 07939 062246.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Rally and Laying-up Supper at Marchwood Yacht Club, Southampton Water

Members are invited to our autumn rally and laying-up supper on the weekend of 8th-9th September, at Marchwood Yacht Club, in the upper reaches of Southampton Water. In recent years this has been an ideal venue and last year the club looked after us very well when a brief breakdown in the catering arrangements was rectified by their committee members cooking us a huge paella. This is always an enjoyable event. Even if you have not joined the rally in previous years, perhaps this year’s slightly earlier date could encourage you to come along??

Southampton tide times on the Saturday are: HW 1009, LW 1624, HW 2231. This is ideal for boats coming from the east, which can leave harbour close to HW and ride the ebb to Calshot. Those coming from the west can make a start with the last of the early morning flood.

We do not have to pre-book moorings or meals. However, it helps the caterers if I can give them advance notice of our likely numbers. It would therefore be helpful if as many attendees as possible could contact me about one week in advance – tel 023 8084 4804 or email to: kendean@onetel.com. (Until late August I expect to be at sea and out of touch).

If the weather turns bad, or if you moor far away, please come anyway – by car.

Last year the mooring fee was £10. The MYC pontoon ramp and road gate have security locks. Early waterborne arrivals should try to make contact with the club’s OOD. Car-borne arrivals should try to attract the attention of someone in the compound. The bar should open at about 1800.

I look forward to seeing you there.

Rally and Laying-up Supper at Marchwood Yacht Club, Southampton Water

Members are invited to our autumn rally and laying-up supper on the weekend of 16th-17th September, at Marchwood Yacht Club, in the upper reaches of Southampton Water. This is the same venue as in recent years because the club is hospitable and its mooring pontoons are sheltered under most conditions. This year they have a new chef and catering team.

HW Southampton on the Saturday is at 0749 and 2024 which means that boats coming from the west can carry the flood from early afternoon. Those coming from the east can start with a civilised breakfast, leave their harbour at around high tide and then find a west-going stream in Spithead until lunchtime. Distant members are welcome to arrive by road.

We do not have to pre-book moorings or meals. However, it always helps the caterers if I can give them advance notice of our likely numbers. I expect to be away and out of touch during August, so it would be helpful if as many attendees as possible could contact me about one week in advance (tel 023 8084 4804 or email to: kendean@onetel.com).

This year there is no mooring fee. The MYC pontoon ramp and road gate have security locks. Early waterborne arrivals should try to make contact with the club’s OOD (Alan Saunders on that day). Rally and Laying-up Supper at Marchwood Yacht Club, Southampton Water

Members are invited to our autumn rally and laying-up supper on the weekend of 10th-11th September, at Marchwood Yacht Club, in the upper reaches of Southampton Water. This is the same venue as in previous years but it is absolutely ideal for us. (Palm trees and golden sand might be nice but hey, this will be in September when decent shelter and good pontoon moorings are more comforting). The evening meal is invariably a convivial affair and sometimes rounded off by a quiz with an unhealthy prize.

HW Southampton on the Saturday is at 1720 which means that boats coming from the west can carry the flood from mid morning. Those coming from the east can either start with an early breakfast or leave their harbour against the flood and then find a west-going stream in Spithead from early-mid afternoon. Distant members are welcome to arrive by road.

We do not have to pre-book moorings or meals. However, it always helps the caterers if I can give them advance notice of our likely numbers. Rally and Laying-up Supper at Marchwood Yacht Club, Southampton Water

Members are invited to our autumn rally and laying-up supper on the weekend of 6th-7th September. Once again, we shall be meeting at Marchwood Yacht Club, in the upper reaches of Southampton Water. The moorings on the MYC pontoons are sheltered from most wind directions, with outer berths deep enough for fin-keelers at all tides. In the evening, we’ll eat in the club, where we always receive a warm welcome.

HW Southampton on the Saturday is at 1708 which means that boats coming from the west can carry the flood from mid morning. Those from (say) Chichester can either start with an early breakfast or leave harbour against the flood and then catch the early west-going stream in Spithead. Distant members are welcome to come by road.

Our June rally was cancelled because there were too few definite attendees to justify booking berths at Cowes, so this is a second chance for Southern-area members to have a get-together.

We do not have to pre-book moorings or meals. However, it helps if I can give the caterers advance notice of our likely numbers, so it would be helpful if as many attendees as possible could contact me about one week in advance (contact details below). If the weather turns bad, please come anyway – by car.

Latest News: Cancelled

I am afraid that due to lack of interest, we have to date only received one acceptance and a few apologies, we have had to cancel this rally.

As we had to make a firm booking of a minimum of six boats for the moorings, we have had no option but to notify Shepards Wharf that sadly, these moorings will not be needed.

If you have not been there before, the Test is full of interest and could even justify a longer visit. There are vessels of all kinds (most of them easily avoided by keeping to the western side, just outside the buoyed channel) and Eling tide mill overlooks the head of navigation.

HW Portsmouth on the Saturday is at 0950 and LW Southampton at 1509, which happens to be ideal for boats coming from the East Solent, then up Southampton water with the early flood. Distant members are welcome to come by road (see note below, concerning gate security).

Dear Sabre owner,

Just to let you know that six of us went to Jail on Saturday 18th Feb 2012. We had a very pleasant lunch of gruel and crusts, only joking, and a good chat.

However the main thing to come out of this exercise, (in a wet, cold and windy prison yard) was we agreed that we should have a Sabre 27 OA members Rally on the w/e of June 2nd – 5th in FOWEY! This is HM’s golden jubilee w/e and then to have another one in late August with the venue to be announced later.

All are invited and hopefully we will see at least 10 boats there!? OK so I know that some of you will be on the high seas or otherwise engaged. BUT if you might just come then please let me know and I will book places on the Pont pontoon but I need to know fairly soon.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon.

P.S. Philip Bridger, I am doing the SW area now so please put my details and the proposed rallies in the next edition of Rattling Sabres.

The Folly Inn, The Medina River, Isle of Wight

We sailed from Poole at 0430 Saturday morning in a rising, brisk S/Westerly, arriving at The Folly moorings at 1130 where Stephen and Helen Lawrence (Shamal) who had sailed across Poole bay the evening before, anchored overnight in Keyhaven pool and drifted up the Solent in the morning, stood calmly ready to take our lines…
